Any piercing should be done by a licensed professional and that includes the belly button area. Thousands of people around the world have their belly button pierced, but that doesn’t mean it’s the easiest thing to do. The piercing should only be done by an experienced person who knows how to pierce the skin. They can help you find the right way to do the piercing and teach you how to properly care for the area. The first thing to do before getting your belly button pierced is to find the right person.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone book
  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Car
  • State issued ID such as a driver’s license
  • Loose fitting clothing
  1. Step 1

Read through your local phone book to find piercing shops in your area. You may find that tattoo parlors can do the belly button piercing, but you may find specialized piercing shops. Make a list of all the shops you’re interested in.

  2. Step 2

Visit each shop on your list to get a feel for the cleanliness of each shop. This is the perfect time to ask any questions you might have about the piercing process including how it happens and how you should care for the piercing. When you find one you like, make an appointment or set up a time.

  3. Step 3

Wear loose fitting clothing when you have the piercing done and bring along your driver’s license. Most shops require proof of age prior to the piercing because they must prove all customers are 18 years of age or older. The loose fitting clothing will come in handy after the piercing so you don’t get it caught on your clothes.

  4. Step 4

Pick out the belly button jewelry that you like the best based on what they have available. You can ask the piercing professional for advice on what pieces are best. If you have any allergies, especially those to metal, make sure the professional knows before the procedure.

  5. Step 5

Sit in the chair for the actual belly button piercing and listen to everything the piercing artist tells you. The whole process of piercing the area only takes a few minutes, but you need to follow their guidelines carefully to ensure your piercing doesn’t become infected.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear clothing that won’t catch or grab on the piercing. This can rip your new piercing out or partially pull it out.
  • Follow all the directions you get to reduce your chances of infection and to keep your piercing looking great for years to come.
  • Never have a piercing done when you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This thins your blood, which can make you bleed more during the piercing process and cause an infection.
  • Don’t even think about having an unlicensed or inexperienced person pierce your belly button. Not only is this dangerous, but your risk of infection raises dramatically.
