Photography can be a challenging craft to master when attempting to achieve a high quality photograph. While there are many elements to consider, light is by far the most important in the impact it will have on your picture. In fact, the difference between a good and a bad picture is often the improper or insufficient use of lighting when taking it. There are many techniques that are used by photographers to use light to their advantage, and one of the techniques requires the use of a light reflector. Follow the steps below to learn how to use a light reflector in photography.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select your light reflector. Light reflectors can be used for both digital and traditional photography. You may want to base your choice of light reflector on the type of camera you plan to use. Hand-held reflectors may be well-suited for digital photography, as this allows for much trial and error. However, for those of us who are still hand-loading our 35mm film and presetting the camera manually, developing costs are expensive enough to opt for a more reliable approach.

  2. Step 2

Evaluate your subject. How the light reflector is used in photography will vary based on the subject that is being photographed. If you are photographing an object, factor in the object’s shape and light properties before adjusting your light reflector. For example, flat objects typically require even lighting to photograph properly, whereas shiny or highly reflective items may call for back lighting for an accurate image to be captured.

  3. Step 3

Experiment with the light reflector to achieve the desired effect on your subject. You will be able to observe the effect in the change in lighting of your subject. Don’t be afraid to try a variety of different techniques to achieve the desired lighting. When you are satisfied, you are ready to take your picture. You have successfully used a light reflector in photography!

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask the subject of your photograph about their lighting preferences, especially if you are hired by the subject for the photography!
  • Don't start taking photographs before properly setting up the reflectors.
