Step 1
Determine what your postage needs are. You will want to consider many different aspects, such as what type of mail class you need; what size and weight of packages will be sent; what type of line you want to hook it up to (Internet, fax, phone); how many envelopes per hour you will need to apply postage to; and how much space you have for a postage meter.
-
Step 2
Contact one of the five United States Postal Service authorized postage meter providers. The USPS has a list on their website with links to the five companies. Their website is listed under Resources. Once you find the machine that has the best features for your needs, order the postage meter with a credit card.
-
Step 3
Set up monthly rental payments via credit card or bank account draft. Set your postage meter for refills using a phone or an Internet connection. This way time and money will be saved, and you will always have postage available.
-
Step 4
Maintain the postage meter by ordering supplies and refills online before you need them.
-
Step 5
Keep the postage meter working well and physically undamaged, as it will have to be returned if you ever decide to upgrade or discontinue rental service.
