How to Make a Stand for a Puppet Theater

Dramatic play is a great activity for all ages. Kids come by it naturally, and they will devote a lot of time it. Hand puppets are a great prop for the exploring the make believe world. Hand puppets don't cost much (you can even find them at a dollar store), and they can provide hours of entertainment to those who seek it. Hand puppets are fun all on their own, but if you really want to have a good time with them--make a puppet theater complete with a stand that hides the people behind the puppets.

Instructions

    • 1

Get the theater. Puppet theaters are available for purchase on both ends of the price spectrum. You can pick up a relatively inexpensive puppet theater, or spend a good deal more for a more costly version. Some are made of plastic and others are made of wood. Still others are made from fabric which makes the puppet theater easy to tote and store.

Drag out the good old folding card table. With a little tweaking the card table will become the stand upon which you rest your puppet theater. A card table makes the perfect choice for your puppet theater stand because the height is just right for hiding behind as the puppet operators do their thing.

Measure the table. Measure the square footage of the table surface as well as the height of the table from the floor to the surface. You'll need these measurements to buy the appropriate amount of fabric to cover the table with.

    • 4

Take a trip to the nearest craft and fabric store. Comb through the various styles and colors of fabric choices until something strikes you as puppet theater worthy. If you need some inspiration, just imagine a classic theater from days gone by. Think velvety fabrics in classic red, rich navy blue or a subdued purple. All of those colors are well suited to a puppet theater atmosphere.

Browse the store's other merchandise to look for any trim pieces that might make nice additions to your puppet theater stand. If the puppet theater has particular adornments that you'd like to match, look for those first. Otherwise, just look for easily attachable decorations such as light weight pieces of felt or colorful cording that you can use to add a little flair to your puppet theater stand.

Set the card table up in an area that is appropriate for a puppet show. Drape the fabric over the table, and adjust it as necessary to completely cover the table and obscure the table itself. Place the puppet theater on top and align it to the back edge of the card table so that the puppet operators will have easy access to the theater. Add any decorations and adornments as desired. Time for a puppet show!

Tips & Warnings

  • When not in use, store all of your supplies together to make putting on a puppet show a quick and easy process.

  • Be careful when making the stand around children. Make sure small children can't grab needle or thread!
