Whenever I set out to clean my refrigerator, I choose a time when I will not be interrupted and my concentration is wholly on the task at hand. I am extremely neat and clean about the areas I keep and prepare food. In fact, my family complains I clean too much.
You will rarely see a spill or mess in my refrigerator! I was once a waitress and it was imparted to me at an early age that I must keep a kitchen immaculate! Restaurants have been shut down due to poor cleanliness standards.
It is a good idea to throw out food, especially perishables, if they are past the date specified on the cans and labels.
Always wipe off the lids and openings and close tightly, to stave off
any bacteria growth. If you practice cleanliness, it is far easier and quicker to actually clean the refrigerator when the time comes.
Make sure the water you use is hot. Use mild soap. If you intend to defrost the freezer, do that first, and separately from the main refrigerator. In fact, I usually do not do them both at the same time.
After you have thrown out the food that is oldest and most spoiled, save the rest for
a leftover soup or ragout.
I remove all bins and shelves first. I wipe the interior of the refrigerator thoroughly with the hot water and soap. Scrub well!!
I wash and rinse the shelves and bins until all signs of food are removed. If they fit into the dishwasher, wash and sterilize them!
Once the interior and the components are
sparking clean, place them back into the refrigerator. Return the food into their proper places.
If you are defrosting the freezer, remember not to delay as food defrosts quickly and many items(especially chicken and fish/shellfish) will have to be cooked right away if they have defrosted too much. Food that is still quite solid can be returned to the freezer without harm.
Whatever vegetables, meats, sauces, and
condiments are leftover, will combine themselves into a creative soup or ragout.
Bon Apetit!
