Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the mesothelium. Mesothelium is derived from a mesodermal cell layer and functions as a membrane that protectively lines internal organs such as the thoracic cavity or lungs (pleura), the heart (pericardium), and the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). Mesothelioma attack causes the cells of the mesothelium to divide abnormally, imposing serious damage on surrounding organs and tissues. The damage commonly occurs on the pleura (the sac that holds the lungs), and is due to excessive exposure to asbestos. Asbestos exposure occurs when a product made with asbestos breaks and releases tiny fibers in the air. These asbestos fibers are so small, that the can easily be inhaled and trapped on surfaces of organs, causing severe problems. People who work in factories, construction, or power plants are in great risks of having this disease. When mesothelioma is present in the system, it takes decades before its actual damage affects the victim. And once it is diagnosed, it will be too late for treatment. By then the average life expectancy of the victim will not be longer than 18 months. To protect yourself against mesothelioma, apply the following preventive measures.

  5. Step 5

Choose the type of work that does not involve asbestos exposure. Here are some lists of jobs that are of high risks to mesothelioma: Working in an insulation and cement manufacturing plants, construction and mining companies, ceiling tile manufacturing plants, and automotive shops.

  6. Step 6

Contact local authorities about some damage parts of public buildings that may contain asbestos. In this manner, you and your whole community will be safe from mesothelioma.

  7. Step 7

Take good care of your lungs to increase their durability. If you are a factory worker, do your best to stop smoking. When you are exposed to asbestos and you are smoking at the same time, it will increase your chance of developing a deadly and malignant type of mesothelioma.

  8. Step 8

Pump your immune system with some daily dose of vitamins and eat healthy. This way, your body will have protection against any type of cancer.

  9. Step 9

Exercise daily and incorporate it with rhythmic breathing. Simply inhale and exhale as you do your daily workout to keep your lungs strong and healthy. Example: when you do bicep curls, inhale as you lift the dumbbell and exhale as you bring it back down. Inhale/exhale with your other exercises to help strengthen your lungs.
