How to Use Basalt Stones

How to Use Basalt Stones thumbnail
Take turns giving and receiving blissful basalt stone massages with a partner. It's an excellent way to soothe tired muscles and relax.

Basalt stones are a dark, dense volcanic rock with a glass-like finish. The smooth rocks are great for hot rock massages, penetrating the muscles with relaxing heat where they are rubbed or applied. They can be bought in kits that also contain an electric basin for warming the water that heats the rocks. With basalt stones, you can give your partner a relaxing massage without the strenuous arm-work and pummeling required of a more traditional massage. Here’s how:

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. How to Use Basalt Stones

    • 1

Follow the instructions on your rock warmer to bring the rocks to the desired temperature.

    • 2

Lie your partner, naked form the waist up, flat on his or her stomach on a comfortable surface. If you don’t have a massage table, a bed or a blanket on the floor will do fine.

    • 3

Rub a few drops of scented massage oil into your palms to warm and spread it on your partner’s back, rubbing it into the skin.

    • 4

Take one rock in each hand and slowly and firmly begin rubbing circles across your partner’s skin. Begin with small circles at the small of the back and work your way upward and outward as your circles get larger, covering the entire back.

    • 5

Repeat the circles several times to thoroughly warm your partner’s skin and loosen the back muscles.

    • 6

Now, place the rocks, on at a time, down your partner’s spine, beginning at the nape of the neck and continuing to the small of the back. Allow the stones to sit there and radiate their heat deep into the muscles, relieving stress and thoroughly relaxing your partner.

    • 7

Wake your partner up after about a half an hour if your performance was good enough to put him or her to sleep. Your turn!

Tips & Warnings

  • Just as you placed the rocks on the spine, you can arrange them on the legs, stomach, arms and even the face. Any surface of your body where muscles need relaxing can be treated with the rubbing and application of basalt stones.
