Instructions

  1. How to Make an Elemental Altar

    • 1

Choose a space. The space should get sunlight but not be too obtrusive. The altar is meant to be personal, not an object for display like a painting or sculpture. You need a flat surface, so choose either a table or perhaps a large window sill.

    • 2

Decide which elements to incorporate. You can choose any number of the four elements but should always strive to keep a balance. Choose fabrics to cover the altar that are associated with the elements you have chosen. Water should be blue, air is silver, earth is green or brown, and fire is red or orange.

    • 3

Decorate for the element of fire. Fire is symbolized by the colors of orange or red and by yellow or gold flowers. Candles are representative of fire. Fire stones like ruby, opal, and garnet can also be used.

    • 4

Decorate for the water element. Water is symbolized by shades of blue. Bowls of water and white wine can be used. Water stones like pearl and coral make excellent tokens of representation.

    • 5

Decorate for the air element. Air is symbolized by the color of silver. Candles and incense can be lit to invoke the air element. Feathers and fans can also be used to symbolize air. Air stones like amethyst and wind chimes also make excellent tokens.

    • 6

Decorate for the earth element. Earth is represented by shades of brown and green. Use stones or terracotta objects to decorate the altar. A stone bowl filled with soil is a good choice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be wary of using incense or candles near flammable objects.

  • Replace liquids frequently.
