Research what styles of rifle you are interested. The AR 15 comes in different barrel lengths, from 20 inch to 16 inch. The stocks also come in a variety of options. There are 4 and 6 position retractable stocks as well as the classic fixed stock. The hand grips/sights are either fixed or removable, leaving a rail on top for add on sights and optics. Explore both styles, especially if you plan on adding your own optics. Take notes on what feels good to you.

Fire as many types of AR 15 as possible. Scout out gun ranges and offer to buy a few bullets to test fire an AR at a range. Some gun stores actually have firing ranges attached to them that rent guns. Here is where you may be able to try a variety of rifles. Some will come with different flash hiders as well as muzzle brakes. AR's as a rule are fairly light recoil rifles and muzzle brakes may or may not be necessary.

Select the rifle you are comfortable with. The calibers range for the 5.56, the standard, to .308 and certain modifications for 9 mm and 22. Hold the rifle by the hand guard and see how it feels in your hand. There are options for different hand guards that may fit your hands better. Try the different stock lengths for optimal fit.

After you finally purchase the rifle, take it to a range and fire 100 or so rounds through it. This will allow you to sight it in using the iron sights it comes with as well as any optics you may have purchased for it. There are options for tri-pods, slings and a myriad of optics ranging from red dot sights to holographic sights. All have mounting options on your AR and are a personal preference. Always observe gun safety while shooting your AR.
