How to Add Coolant to the Radiator of a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina Sedan
The 1996 Chevrolet Lumina’s cooling system was originally filled with coolant specifically designed to remain in the vehicle for 100,000 miles or five years, which ever came first. Keeping the coolant at the proper level protects the engine from freezing down to -34 degrees F, and against boiling up to 265 degrees F. Although the closed system is designed to allow for the normal expansion and contraction of engine coolant, if the fluid level drops too low it may be necessary to add coolant. Here’s how to do it safely.

How to Add Coolant to the Radiator of a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina Sedan
-
1
Turn off the engine and allow the Lumina to cool completely. Once the engine has cooled, pull back on the hood release lever located under the dash to the left of the driver’s side. Lift the hood to its fully opened position.
-
2
Locate the Coolant Recovery Tank on the left side of the engine. You should be able to observe the level of coolant through the plastic tank. If the level is below the COLD mark proceed to Step Seven. If there is no coolant in the Coolant Recovery Tank proceed to Step Three.
-
-
3
Insure the engine is completely cool before adding coolant directly to the radiator. Locate the radiator pressure cap on the left side of the radiator at the front of the Lumina.
-
4
Remove the radiator pressure cap by slowly turning it counter-clockwise without pressing down until it stops. If you hear a hiss there is still pressure in the system. Stop turning the pressure cap and wait for the hiss to stop.
-
5
Press down on the radiator pressure cap and continue turning counter-clockwise until the pressure cap is free. Remove the pressure cap.
-
6
Pour a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL coolant and clean water into the radiator until the radiator is filled to the base of the radiator filler neck. Replace the radiator pressure cap by turning it clockwise until it snaps into place.
-
7
Remove the cap from the coolant recovery tank. Add a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL coolant and clean water until the level reaches the COLD mark. Replace the cap. Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings
Coolant in a closed radiator system is under intense pressure when it gets hot. Never turn the radiator pressure cap until the engine has become completely cool.
The 1996 Chevrolet Lumina is equipped with an electric engine fan which can start even if the engine is not running. Always keep hands and clothing away from electric engine fans.
The 1996 Chevrolet Lumina is designed to operate with a mixture of antifreeze and water. Adding plain water will cause the vehicle's sensors to misread engine temperatures and could cause overheating or even fire.
