How to Escape Into Comics

Step1
In order to escape anything, the desire to escape must be present. If you are unwilling to embrace the nature of comics, escape into one will not be easy. First, it is necessary to suspend disbelief. You cannot scoff to yourself at the manner in which the hero, if there is one, attained his or her super power. You cannot roll your eyes when the problem is resolved in an unbelievable fashion.
Step2
It is necessary to choose the genre of the comic that you desire to escape into. There are classics like Batman, Superman, and Spiderman. There are issues dating back fifty years, worth a pretty penny, and there are is everything in between. There are limited edition versions and there are crossovers where two heroes from different comic books work together or against each other. Besides the classic superhero comic books, there are various other types that have quirky social commentaries and there is a revenge genre. This where the main character is wronged viciously and the story is fueled by his or her vengeance.
Step3
Once you have chosen what you are going to read, find some time and place without distractions to start the comic book. In more adult themed media, the beginning usually begins with a bang and if you do not focus in the beginning, it will be hard to get into the story. Once you begin, enjoy yourself. If you can identify with any of the characters, focus on that fact. If you cannot, place yourself in one of their shoes. What would you do if your love was taken from you? How do you feel about being called on to save the day with little gratitude? What if you were the villain? Would you be able to come up with a devilish plot in a more efficient manner?

Tips & Warnings

  • Reading is meant to be enjoyable and our imaginations are something that can take us anywhere. Pretending is a sign of intelligence in children, but childish in adults. Why? Don't take yourself too seriously not to enjoy a good story about something super.
