While anyone can sign up to sell Mary Kay, not just anyone can make the business work. Take these tips from an insider to give your business the edge it needs to succeed quickly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • $150.00-$1000.00
  • business attire
  • a list of contacts (business and personal)
  • computer access
  • a seperate telephone line
Step1
Visit www.marykay.com and click on the link for signing up. They will help you find the contact numbers to a local consultant. By the way, you will be signed up under a fellow consultant who will recieve credit for your sales, so sign up with someone you know if possible.
Step2
Have the $150.00-$200.00 start up fee ready, and be prepared for the suggestion from your director that you purchase inventory. While you do not have to, buying inventory is usually one of the most effective ways of ensuring success. After all, custumers would rather have their products on hand at all times, rather than having to wait for an order to process.
Step3
When your starter pack arrives, it will contain loads of information on the company and the products you will sell. Make learning those products like the back of your hand your number one priority before ever giving your first Mary Kay facial. You cannot sell what you do not know.
Step4
Get a seperate telephone line and messaging system set up for your business as soon as possible, even if you are only working the business part time. A professional method of being contacted is essential, even if it is only through a cell phone.
Step5
Make a list of everyone you know, and begin working those people to make more contacts. While friends and family will likely be glad to buy Mary Kay products from you, building a Mary Kay business quickly depends upon "real" customers that are using you for what you can do for them, and not vice versa.
Step6
Take advantage of the technology that Mary Kay offers its business women now. You can create a personal website, accept credit card payments, send out email invitations and announcements, hold online "parties," and so much more with your Mary Kay business. It is essential that you stay current on this technology to grow your business. If you don't know how to do these things, let your director help you.
Step7
Start signing up other consultants for faster income results. To grow your Mary Kay earnings faster, you can take advantage of the system they provide that allows each consultant to make a commission off of the sales of those they sign up. The more new Mary Kay beauty consultants you sign up, the higher your commission percentage will be (in other words, you may start out with a 4% commission, but with added consultants increase your commission to 9% or more).
Step8
Finally, grow your Mary Kay business fast through old fashioned word of mouth. Wear your Mary Kay pin (which will be provided to you), invite people to the Mary Kay meetings every single week, and make regular contact with customers. Understand that follow up appointments and phone calls are the life line of any successful Mary Kay business, and they also help your customer base increase much faster than depending upon occassional parties would. Work hard those first few weeks, and your Mary Kay business will begin to work for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Set appointments like crazy those first few weeks, and concentrate more on making contacts than sales. Sales will come on their own, but contacts require hard work and concentration. Master that, and your Mary Kay business will boom.
  • While you will want to buy inventory right off the bat, consider how large your initial customer base will be first. If you have 20 friends who love lipstick, concentrate on buying a large lipstick inventory. If you have 3 friends who don't wear much makeup, concentrate on the facial care system at first and don't overdo it. As your customer base increases, so should your inventory.
  • Learn what your customers want before investing in Mary Kay inventory. Ask your director to give you a few days to question friends and family about what they would be initially interested in buying from you.

on 10/7/2008 I strongly agree, everything this article said to do was right on the money and i had to attend many meetings to learn all of this! i'll be honest, if you truly work your buisness it will work for you. But, its def. a struggle but the way i look at it an extra 20 dollars i've earned from this is $20 more than i would have made!

on 9/26/2008 The biggest mistake I made in Mary Kay was ordering $2,000.00 worth of product to make the most of that initial investment and trusting the gal that got me on board, who MISTAKENLY thought I could return the products if they didn't sell. I've been at this almost a year, have the website, many repeat customers (at least 20) and frequent specials (25% off first orders, 10% off for referrals) and so much more. I enjoy the opportunities, but I can't tell you how sorry I am that I just didn't wait until someone ordered, to have the product. So, start and shop smart for at least the first few months.

on 9/10/2008 This is a great article! It provides the facts about Mary Kay without sugar-coating them, or worse, turning people off of Mary Kay. I appreciate your honesty and encouragement!
