How to Wash Your Hair with Conditioner

Conditioner washing is using a conditioner to wash your hair instead of shampoo. Most shampoos contain harsh cleansers that strip the natural oils from your scalp, which in turn makes your scalp produce more oils. Therefore, the more you shampoo, the more you need to shampoo. Conditioner washes are a gentle yet effective alternative.

Many people with curly hair find that conditioner washes work great for them, sometimes bringing out even more natural curl that they didn't know was there.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hot Running Water
  • Inexpensive Conditioner (Suave and V05 work great for conditioner washes)
  1. Step 1

    Wet your hair thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Squeeze a good amount of conditioner into your hand. Be generous.

  3. Step 3

Massage the conditioner into your scalp. The key is to focus on your scalp and to make sure you really scrub it well. Conditioners do have some cleansers, but you will have to work a little harder with your fingers to make sure you get your scalp really clean.

  4. Step 4

    Rinse thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Suave and V05 really are the best for this. I've tried others, but for some reason, those two brands work really well as gentle cleansers.
  • Don't forget to scrub really well!
  • If you prefer, you can follow with your regular conditioner as an actual conditioning step
  • Some people find that they still occasionally need to use shampoo every once in a while to clarify.
  • Since hair can easily become dependant on shampoo, you may need to slowly incorporate conditioner washes into your routine. One way to do this is to first do a co-wash every other wash, then every third, and so on. Just follow how your hair feels and don't feel like you need to go out of the house with greasy hair to do this - you don't.
