How to Play "Rescue Princess Fiona": A Shrek-Inspired Game of Tag

Do your kids love Shrek? Watch the original Shrek DVD for family time or quiet time. When the movie's done, get your kids off the couch and engaged in a fun game of tag. "Rescue Princess Fiona" is an active game inspired by DreamWork's hit movie about everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A doll to represent Princess Fiona
  • 2 or more Shrek-loving kids
  1. Step 1

Designate an area to be the Dragon's Keep. Place a doll (Princess Fiona) in the highest room of the tallest tower. Just be sure the littlest player is able to reach her.

  2. Step 2

Choose one player to be Dragon. The other players work together to rescue Princess Fiona and bring her to a designated safe area--Duloc--which should be a good distance from the Dragon's Keep. The "rescue team" can include Shrek, Donkey, or any of the knights from Duloc. If only two children are playing the game, then one is Dragon, the other Shrek.

  3. Step 3

Dragon waits near the tower. The rescuers start at Duloc. To begin the game, Dragon shouts out, "Shrek!" This is the signal for the rescuers to run toward the tower, trying to tag Dragon and get Princess Fiona.

  4. Step 4

If Dragon gets tagged before anyone reaches Princess Fiona (which will most likely be the case), the dragon drops to the ground and freezes. The moment a player has hold of the princess, Dragon may get up and tag Shrek, Donkey, and the rest as they try to get Princess Fiona to the safety of Duloc.

  5. Step 5

Each time Dragon tags one of the rescuers, that player must drop to the ground and freeze. The "free" rescuers can work together, tossing the doll back and forth in order for one of them to get her to safety. If all of the knights are tagged before getting Princess Fiona to Duloc, Dragon wins. If at least one knight returns safely to Duloc with the princess, the rescuers win.

  6. Step 6

Select a new Dragon and play the game again!

Tips & Warnings
  • The doll representing Princess Fiona does not necessarily have to be a Princess Fiona doll. Any doll will do. The softer the better, as she can get tossed around in this game. Players can even use a pillow or ball to represent the princess. (Sorry Fiona!)
  • "Rescue Princess Fiona" would be a fun activity for a Shrek-themed birthday party.
  • If playing the game inside, make sure that there are no breakables, sharp edges, or slippery floors.
