No matter if it is your shoes, your bread, your toilet paper or anything else your dog has managed to sink his teeth into, teaching your dog drop will save you many headaches in the long run.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Treat
  • Patience
  • Dog
  1. Step 1

Find your dog who is running around the house with your favorite pair of shoes in his mouth.

  2. Step 2

Get a treat that your dog loves and say the word "drop"

  3. Step 3

While he will more than likely not drop because he enjoys eating your shoes more than the treat, try it again. Keep repeating the word "drop" over and over while showing him the treat.

  4. Step 4

If your dog does drop the half chewed shoe, give him the treat and reward him by saying good dog as much as possible. If this works, keep doing it over and over again anytime he has something in his mouth he should not have.

  5. Step 5

In case your dog never let go from step 4, take the dogs lips and gently press them into his teeth. Not hard, but enough where his gums are rubbing against his sharp teeth. When you do this, repeat the word "drop" over and over again. Eventually he will tie the word drop to the unpleasant feeling and you will have mastered teaching your dog drop!

Tips & Warnings
  • Training your dog to drop takes a while. Be Patient and never yell at your dog. It does not do anything when it comes to training. Do not hit your dog either, all that does is make him fear you and does not train your dog how to drop.
