Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Consider the recipient's needs. Don't buy gift cards to expensive clothing stores for your brother if he hates to shop. Don't buy gift cards to stores such as Wal-Mart and Target for your aunt if she prefers to support locally owned businesses. A gift card to Pizza Hut is a bad choice for your cousin if she lives in a town that only has a Dominoes.
Step2
Read the fine print before making your purchase. Store policies for gift cards can vary. Cards with fees and expiration dates should be avoided whenever possible.
Step3
Always call the number on the back of the gift card to verify the balance before you present it to the recipient. Cashiers can make mistakes when activating the cards and giving someone a gift that is basically useless can be very embarrassing!
Step4
When giving a gift card, remember that presentation is important. Don't simply stick the card in an envelope and hand it to the recipient. Consider wrapping the card up with a small coordinating gift. For example, a box of microwave popcorn would be a good accompaniment to a gift card from your local video store.

on 6/8/2008 Great tips! I agree with calling the company to verify the balance I never thought to do that but it would be horrible to give it to someone with no money on it.
