Query Writing

A query is a synopsis of a writing idea you would like to submit to a magazine or newspaper. Yet, many new freelance writers have trouble writing their first query. They know the article is the right fit for the publication but, don't know how to sell. Below are the six basic pieces of information needed in a query to sell the article for publication.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Who's your editor?

    Who's your editor?

Find the correct editor's name and title. Sending your query to the wrong editor is a guaranteed rejection.

  2. Step 2

It may sound simple but, make sure it is addressed to the right publication. Many freelance writers have mixed up the publication they sent a query too.

  3. Step 3

The formal addressing approach is an acceptable way to start your query but, editors have little time, start with a great title because getting to the point can produce the desired effect.

  4. Step 4

Your first sentence should say exactly why your article will appeal to readers. In that first paragraph let the editor know exactly what you have to offer. The subject, how long a piece, and how much time is needed to complete the article.

  5. Step 5

The second paragraph is your self promotion time. If you don't have a website, you should get one and post your clips there and have a link to them.

  6. Step 6

Before you forward your query, proof it, and log in when you mailed or e-mailed it. This lets you keep track of when you submitted your query. Nothing can be more annoying than a query full of errors. Always include contact information. It should be your phone numbers and e-mail address.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your query short, simple and to the point. One page only.
  • Do not talk about rejected pieces, how long and hard you worked on the piece, the assistance of others, how thrilling it would be to be published, rights you wish to sell, discuss price or payment, and copyright information.
