1
Make sure you eat a healthy diet. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water. Since nails are primarily made up of protein make sure you are getting enough good protein in your diet. Eat plenty of beans, legumes, and oily fish.
-
2
Don't use nail polish remover more than twice monthly. Nail polish remover contains harsh chemicals that weaken the nail structure. Using too much nail polish remover will cause the nails to split.
-
-
3
Don't use your nails as tools. Using your nails to grasp or pick at something puts stress on them and may cause them to break. Use other parts of your hands to pick up small objects.
-
4
Don't pick at your cuticles. This may lead to an infection that will weaken your nail base.
-
5
Wear gloves when doing household chores. Rubber gloves should be worn when doing dishes or any cleaning that requires your hands to be in contact with detergents. Cleaners often contain harsh chemicals that damage nails. When you're gardening wear gardening gloves to avoid breaking or damaging your nails.
-
6
Apply moisturizer to your nail bed daily to prevent them from becoming brittle. When you lotion your hands be sure to rub the lotion into your cuticles. Nails need moisture just as much as the rest of your body.
-
7
If your nails tend to be soft use a nail hardener. A clear coat polish that strengthens nails will help keep nails from breaking. Apply it to your nails as a top coat after you polish them. If you don't wear polish apply to your naked nails.

Keep your nails manicured. Nails that are all the same length and filed into an oval, round or square shape are less likely to break.
