How to Dress for Summer in New York City
There's a reason people leave New York City in August-- it's hot, steamy and all that concrete seems to soak up the heat. But for those who stay in the city, there's no reason why you have to sacrifice style for comfort. Here are some suggestions for easy summer style.

How to Dress for Summer in New York City
-
1
Layer, especially in early summer. While the days can be oppressively hot, the temperature can drop at night. Try wearing a lightweight dress in light colors with a cardigan or a hoodie. If you want to wear pants, try linen or cotton, and pair them with a tank top or t-shirt. Avoid wearing anything too tight, or jeans, especially skinny jeans.

2
Avoid wearing flip-flops on city streets. The relaxed ease of flip-flops are tempting but they are rarely durable for the rough and pothole laden streets and, with the tourists pouring into the city, you risk getting your exposed foot stepped on. While socks and sneakers seem too hot to wear in the summer, try sandals with a thick sole and at least 1/2 inch of heel (wedges, after all, are in style). If you must wear open toe, make sure to watch out: That crowd from Montana might stop in the middle of the street (and possibly on your foot) to read a map.

Protect your eyes with sunglasses. While the skyscrapers and high-rises do block out some of the sun, you will need shades, especially if you venture into lower Manhattan. Wide-brimmed hats are a plus.

4
Carry a large colorful tote in bright colors to cart around all your summer essentials (that cardigan or hoodie for evening and sunscreen). Try one of woven stray. Look for secure, well-made handles. Though they are popular now, avoid see-through totes: it just makes it easier for people to see what you have.
