Things You'll Need:
- A computer with Internet connection
- Flight Simulator software
-
Step 1
Do some research before jumping in. Visit flightsim websites, and forums to hear what other flightsimmers have to say. Visit the websites of any VAs that strike your fancy. Read the Faqs and Pilots' handbook to get an idea of what is expected. You will find that the structures vary a lot. Also pay attention to the quality of the website. Generally, the better organized the website is, the better organized the VA will be.
-
Step 2
Think about what you want from a VA and how much time you want to put in. Some VAs require you to start with a small airplane and work your way up. Others have a much more free structure that allows pilots more choice about what and where they fly. Select a VA that fits your lifestyle. Some people want a very regimented structure. Some people prefer a looser one.
-
Step 3
Pay attention to detail, when you apply. When filling out an application, take it seriously, if you want the other members to take you seriously. Yes, this is all imaginary, but the people who run the VA are real, and probably put a lot of work into making your experience as interesting and educational as possible. Treat the rules with respect and follow the admissions procedures precisely. This will go a long way toward getting you accepted.
-
Step 4
Introduce yourself. Once you have joined, be sure to go to the VA's discussion forum and introduce yourself. Essentially, a VA is a club where you can meet other people who share your interests. Make the most of the opportunity. You might even meet some people who live nearby.
-
Step 5
Volunteer your time. After joining, if you have a good time, then consider volunteering your time and skills to improving the VA, or consider making a donation. It take a lot of time and energy to create and maintain a good VA. It also takes money to buy bandwidth. The more active you are in your VA, the more rewarding the experience will be for everyone.
