How to Mount Shelf Sides

There are many ways to improve a home, or work area to increase aesthetic quality or overall storage space. One way to do this is to install shelves, which can be mounted to most walls and surfaces. If you are the type of person who enjoys home improvement and the satisfaction of a job well done, you may want to mount shelf sides by yourself. Follow the steps below to learn how to easily and successfully, mount your shelf sides.

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver, Drill, screws, (approx: ½ inch to ¾ inch), L-shaped shelf mounts, ¾ inch plywood

  1. Step 1

    Determine the location of the shelf. This means deciding where you want to place the shelf on the wall, based on the purpose and usage intended after installation, as well as the dimensions of the shelf itself. Typically, the shelf’s length should be longer than 16 inches and have a width of more than 12 inches.

  2. Step 2

    Find the studs in the wall. This is the part of the wall with additional support, so that your shelf will be adequately supported. These are usually the vertical beams which can be easily found based on the wall’s resistance to a light tap of the screwdriver. Once you have located the studs, mark them according to your desired shelf placement.

  3. Step 3

    Measure the distance between the floor and each of your stud marks. If the distance is inconsistent, you need alter the original marking, so that your shelf is level. Next, using the L-shaped shelf mounts drill the appropriate holes according to your desired shelf placement. Now you are ready to mount the shelf, using your screws and screwdriver to secure it firmly in place.
