Your pet may be old, ill or simply ate a something that didn’t agree with him, but in any of those cases you’re going to end up with pet vomit. Animals seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to vomiting, and they will often bypass tile or concrete to fully spit up on your nice rug. You can clean pet vomit from carpet with a lot of patience and a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rags
  • Paper towel
  • Trash bag
  • Water
  • Stain and odor cleaning solution

How to Clean Pet Vomit From Carpet

  1. Step 1

Scoop up as much as the vomit as you can with paper towels and immediately place in a trash bag. The sooner you can get to the vomit, the better, before it seeps into the carpet fiber and dries.

  2. Step 2

Use a damp rag to pull upward at the carpet fibers, loosening any vomit that did not come clean with your first scooping. Scoop those remnants into the trash. Rinse the rag with cool water.

  3. Step 3

Use a cleaning solution from the pet or grocery store. Test the cleaning solution on a corner area of the carpet to make sure it does not ruin the rug by fading the color or otherwise damaging it. If the solution is bad for your rug, test others until you find one that is gentle enough to use.

  4. Step 4

Spray or pour a generous amount of stain and odor cleaning solution into the vomit area and gently scrub to dislodge any other chunks. Use paper towels to scoop up the chunks and throw in the trash. Keep scrubbing until all traces of the vomit are gone.

  5. Step 5

Let the area dry for several hours, keeping pets away from the newly cleaned carpet so they do not try to lick at the cleaner. You can place an overturned mesh waste basket or other item that allows air through over the spot, so air gets in but pets don’t.

  6. Step 6

Throw the trash outside and wash, or dispose of, the rag.

Tips & Warnings
  • A popular cleaning solution that has been successfully on the market for years is Nature’s Miracle. It's sold in most pet stores and even some supermarkets.
  • Don’t be afraid of using too much cleaner, most are safe for carpet pads. You’d rather use too much than too little so the vomit smell gets cleaned up.
  • If your pet continues to vomit for unknown reasons, take him to the vet to see what may be ailing him. A puke here and there is usually nothing to worry about, unless you think your pet has ingested poison or another harmful substance.
