Deciding to hire a private caregiver is a personal decision. A person may need part time help with their loved one or full time help. There are a few reasons a family decides to go with a private caregiver instead of an agency and you can capitalize on those points. The family is looking for someone who is kind and compassionate. If that is you than you are in the right field as a private caregiver. So how do you get steady private caregiver work?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pen
  • References
  • Credentials
  1. Step 1

Make a list of what duties you are willing to perform as a caregiver. Do you need to work full time or part time. How do you want to be paid? Do you want a salary or an hourly wage? The more details you have the better. When you are interviewing with a potential employer, you don't want to have any misunderstandings. There is less of a chance of that happening with more and more details written out.

  2. Step 2

Search your local newspaper for jobs. Anyone who is looking to hire a private caregiver and not use an agency is going to advertise in their local newspapers. If you don't see any, then call the newspaper and place an ad for your services. Someone can then contact you. Maybe you will even get a few offers and be able to choose the one that is best for you.

  3. Step 3

Be prepared at your interview. Be ready to list your references. If you are just starting out it is best to list all of your credentials (such as nursing school, you know CPR, etc.) and be ready to give an account why you think this job is right for you. You want to sell yourself, but be honest. Interviewers can tell if a person is lying.

  4. Step 4

Discuss your list with the potential employer and see if you are both on the same page. Ask to meet the individual you will be caring for and introduce yourself. Ask them if they have anything special they would like done and in some cases if there is anywhere special they would like to go. Try to bond with them as that is the most important part of the whole process. If you have the right credentials and you bond with the individual in need of care you are almost sure to get the job.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find out how long the position is available for. You may not want to take a job for only three weeks if you are looking for steady work.
  • Be fair to the employer and don't take a job you are not willing to perform. If you are not willing to change adult diapers for example than don't take a job with an incontinent individual.
