How to Position a Bicycle Saddle

We live in an era where exercise is an everyday activity, and bicycle riding is a fun, simple way to get exercise while enjoying the great outdoors. However, having the perfectly positioned saddle or seat is important for a comfortable ride.

Instructions

  1. How to Position a Bicycle Saddle

    • 1

Make it level. It is important that the saddle of your bicycle is level and that the rails in the seat post clamp are centered when you begin to position the saddle. This starting position will help you to determine how you must move the saddle.

    • 2

Pedal backwards. Position yourself in an area where you can hold yourself up while pedaling such as in a doorway, and begin to pedal backwards. Position your saddle to where your legs are completely straight when the pedal reaches the bottom.

    • 3

Make your mark. Put an indicator on the seat post, so that if the post is ever moved you know that height to which you must return for saddle for your ultimate comfort on your bicycle.

    • 4

Level your saddle. Once you have the height of your saddle determined, make the saddle itself it in position. Position the saddle so that your pelvis is level. This usually means that the nose of the saddle is higher than the back.

    • 5

Tip the saddle. If the nose of the saddle bothers you, tip it slightly. But make sure that your body is not shifted forward or that your weight isn’t supported properly.

    • 6

Take the bicycle for a test drive. Ride your bicycle on your normal course to determine if you have positioned the saddle correctly.
