Similar to a chatroom, 'Shoutbox' is another form of communicating with friends or visitors on your blog. Adding a shoutbox is simple so read further on to learn how to create one on your blog page following the five simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • A blog and blogger account
  • Shoutbox

    Register

  1. Step 1

Register free at "Shoutmix." After creating a unique username, password and filling out your contact information, choose the style you wish your shoutbox to look like by going to the third box that reads, 'Display'- Style and Colors. You can select different font style, sizes and colors to customize your shoutbox.

  2. Step 2

Go to 'Quick Start' and select 'Get Codes’ on the left side of the page. You will see four different selections-- 'Place Shoutbox on Webpage', 'Place Flash viewer on webpage', 'Place link to shoutbox on webpage' and 'Use shoutbox directly'. Pick the first option, ‘Place Shoutbox on Webpage’ and you will get a generated code to add to your blog. Highlight the codes then right-click your mouse to copy it.

  3. Step 3

Go to 'Blogger' and login to your blog account with your ID and password. After logging in you will see the 'Dashboard' page so click on 'Layout. Click on the 'Page Element' tab then "Add Page Element" and you will see a popup window. Select 'HTML/ JavaScript' then paste the shoutbox code in the empty box.

  4. Step 4

Save the changes made to your blog by going to the lower left side of the page where an orange rectangular shape box is located. You can go to 'View Blog' and, on the front page, you will notice your very own shoutbox added to your blog. Now your visitors are able to chat with each other anytime they want.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can put your shoutbox on the left, center or right side of your blog.
  • If you want to remove the shoutbox, go back to the 'Page Element' page, click edit HTML/ Javascript box and select 'Remove'.

on 10/6/2008 Hey Renee, thanks for the tip!

In addition to the Shoutbox you mentioned, I would also recommend Chatroll (http://chatroll.com). Chatroll offers an embeddable chat widget that can serve as a shoutbox or full-sized chat box, with ability to delete posts and ban by IP. Best of all, it is completely real-time, without the need to hit "refresh".

Here is an article with steps to add Chatroll to Blogger:

And an example of a blog with the Chatroll shout box:

Thanks!
