How to Be a Missionary to America

1. Align yourself with a belief or a mission. Missions can be both charitable or religious, but either way you need to align yourself with a cause. Almost every religion has missionaries of some sort. Your first step may be joining a church or a ministry in your area. If religion is not your thing but you still want to be a missionary of hope and charity, there are tons of different volunteer opportunities through aid and disaster relief organizations.

2. Decide whether you want to volunteer full time or part time? This is an important question to ask yourself before diving into a mission. Full time missionary work means giving up everything you are doing now, and focusing specifically on your mission, whatever it may be. Part time allows you flexibility to continue your career or to be with your family, while still serving as a missionary to those around you.

3. Raising the funds. Many full time missions, and some part time missions, are not free. Raising community and family support behind you is a large part of starting a mission. Send out support letters or even hold fund raisers to help raise the money needed for you to succeed. Be sure to tell everyone exactly what you plan to do and share your heart with them. The more that people can see your cause and believe in you, the more money they will be willing to give to support you in your efforts.

4. Learn to Persevere. A mission, especially to your home country, can be very trying and difficult. It can also be incredibly rewarding. Take the steps needed to protect your physical and emotional health. Make sure that you have a strong support system when things get rough. Also be flexible and creative, as things may not always go as planned.

5. Enjoy the fruit. As stated in step 4, being a missionary can be an incredibly rewarding experience. It doesn't matter whether it is a religious mission, or service mission. You will be affecting those around you for the better, you will change lives, and you will never be the same.
