For Wiccans, meditation is by and large one of the most important rituals you can perform. As a daily ritual for many, it is quite possibly the most frequently performed ritual of the faith. Funny thing is, many outside of the Wiccan faith perform variations of this, while not even realizing how close they really are to it. If you’ve never done a Wiccan meditation, following the simple steps below can help you become more familiar with the process. As with all things Wiccan, everyone has their own personal variations and preferences. None of the following is “set in stone.”

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • God(s)/Goddess(es)
  • A quiet, private space, where you won’t be interrupted
  • Personal time
  • Candles
  • Runes
  • Elemental additions
  • Relaxing music
  1. Step 1

You’ll need to place your candles in the appropriate areas for the circle. You’ll place a brown or green candle in the north, representing Mother Earth. A yellow candle in the east represents wind. South will hold a red candle, representing fire. In the west you’ll place a blue candle, which symbolizes water. Last, place a white candle in the center of the circle, right in front of where you’ll be sitting.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you are in a safe, quiet place where you will not be disturbed. It is important to respect the god(s) and goddess(es), as well as yourself, by devoting complete focus to your meditation. If you choose, begin playing a tape or CD of nature sounds to establish a relaxing ambiance that will make you feel completely comfortable.

  3. Step 3

Once you are finished with initial set up, you may step inside your circle. If you are sure you won't need to exit the circle until your ritual is complete, you may begin your quarter calls. Each person has their own personal quarter calls. If you don't yet have some that you use, try doing an Internet search. Many Wiccans have several sets of quarter calls they will use, depending upon the ritual.

  4. Step 4

Once your circle is cast, you’ll need to find a comfortable position to sit or lay in. Make sure your breathing is in no way inhibited, and remember that good posture is recommended for expending negative energies. Once you’re comfortable, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Try to focus on seeing your inner self. It’s perfectly acceptable to ponder some of your current worries; however, you’ll need to walk a fine line that allows you to consider them without allowing the stress they may cause to control your meditation. Envision calm surroundings, and allow the positive energies within your circle to flow through your body, driving out the negative energy. It is common to feel in a dreamlike trance, balancing between sleep and consciousness.

  5. Step 5

After you’ve completed your meditation, you should feel completely relaxed. Before exiting your circle, it is important to thank the god(s) and goddess(es) for their guidance and support. Invite them (in your closing quarters) to stay if they will, part if they must. After thanking the god(s) and goddess(es) of each element, snuff out the candle. It is important to do this in the exact opposite order as your circle casting, starting with the last, and ending with the first.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many people find that meditation is the most effective when in their natural element. If you’re a water sign by birth, try doing your meditation on a quiet beach; if you’re an earth sign, finding a clear grove amidst trees may make an ideal spot.
  • You may choose to incorporate Wiccan runes into your meditation ritual. One way to do this is to lay out the runes you choose to draw energy from directly in front of you within the circle.
  • As with any Wiccan ritual, it is important to cleanse your spirit before beginning your meditation. Always remember to completely close your circle. Never invite any beings from the spirit world into your circle unless you are 100 percent certain of whom it is you are dealing with, and what their intents are. Even then, it is strongly advised against. Beings from the spirit world are often masters at disguising their true intents.

on 6/7/2008 Personally, I'm skeptical about all religions - but you're gutsy to put this information out there. I catch a lot of flak for my poilitcal articles!
