Things You'll Need:
- Access to bicycle clothing and accessories, either through a store, a catalog, or online.
-
Step 1
Start with your feet. If your bike has clipless pedals, you'll need specialized bike shoes with the proper cleats attached. The fit of the shoe should be snug and firm. If you're using toe clips or platform pedals, a stiff shoe with a firm sole is the best way to transfer energy to the pedals.Choose your socks depending on the weather. Get thin cotton or synthetic blends for warm weather, wool for cool-weather rides.
-
Step 2
Shorts or pants should be padded unless you're riding very short distances. Go with classic bike shorts--choose knickers or baggy mountain bike style shorts if you want a little more coverage.
-
Step 3
Your top should be form fitting and breathable, particularly if you like to ride fast (It cuts down on wind resistance). Cycling jerseys offer zippers on the front, and convenient pockets for snacks and cell phones on the back.
-
Step 4
For your head, a helmet is essential. Some riders prefer a skull cap under their helmet to soak up sweat, or a short billed cap to protect their eyes from the sun. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun and from flying objects and debris as well.
-
Step 5
Don't forget cold and inclement weather. Arm and leg warmers provide extra protection you can carry with you, while cycling jackets, vests, pants, and shoe covers help protect you from rain and cold.
