People have been planting and enjoying roses for centuries. Look at any garden and you are likely to see a bounty of lush, fragrant roses. The selection of roses available to the home gardener is huge, with new varieties of roses being introduced with each new growing season. So how do you decide which varieties of roses are right for your garden? The decision is simple if you keep these key factors in mind when choosing which roses are right for your garden.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Car
  • Books about roses
  • Garden catalogs
  1. Step 1

Determine your climate zone. You can do this by visiting the USDA Planting Zone website. Once you have determined the correct climate zone for your area you will have a better understanding of the types of roses that will grow in your garden. Most varieties of roses need 5 to 6 hours of full sun every day to grow and produce an abundance of blooms. If you live in a colder climate zone, you might consider planting the old garden variety roses as they are extremely hardy during the harsh winter months.

  2. Step 2

Consider the size of your roses carefully. The old garden roses which can reach 10 to 15 feet in height are perfect for camouflaging trash cans and other unsightly objects around your home and garden. Miniature roses are perfect for borders and accent planting. A climbing rose is the obvious choice to outline windows and to trail along fences.

  3. Step 3

Measure your planting area before you purchase your roses. Upon arriving at your local garden center, compare you measurements with the roses you plan to purchase. Most modern roses need to be planted 3 to 4 feet apart. Plant miniature rose bushes 10 to 20 inches apart. Roses need ample room to grow and should be planted as far away from other trees and shrubs as possible.

  4. Step 4

Choose the ideal color. Color is an important factor when you’re planning your rose garden. Browse through rose and garden books as well as catalogs to get an idea of how you want your garden to look. You will need to take the colors of the other flowers in your yard and garden into consideration, as well as the color of your home.

  5. Step 5

Determine how much time you can honestly spend on the care and maintenance of your rose garden. Many of the modern roses produce stunning flowers in vibrant new colors; the downside for the home gardener is that they are much harder to care for. If you prefer to have a garden that will require less maintenance, consider planting landscape roses. These roses will require less care on you part, but still provide your garden with a burst of color. Landscape roses are also more disease resistant than the newer varieties. There are numerous varieties and colors of roses to choose from. With a little time and research, you are sure to find the perfect roses for your garden.
