The Skull Brightener Breathing Technique, or Kapalabhati Pranayama, is basically a series of short, proactive exhales followed by slower, more passive inhales. To fully realize the exhales, the muscles of the lower abdominals force the air out of the lungs through a strong contraction. When you release the contraction, your body’s natural response should be a gentle inhale. The use of this technique is said to increase oxygen retention and removes metabolic waste. It should invigorate and energize the practitioner while purifying the nasal passages and lungs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Loose, comfortable clothing
  1. Step 1

Take a seat on the floor with your legs crossed.

  2. Step 2

Bring your hands, one on top of the other, to your lower abdominals. This should allow you to focus on the contraction more fully.

  3. Step 3

Contract the muscles of the lower belly and push out the air of your lungs in a powerful exhalation. As you exhale, be aware of the movement of air. Think of it as cleaning out your head of clutter and waste.

  4. Step 4

Release the contraction and slowly let your lungs fill again with air.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the sequence, making sure to pace yourself so as not to become lightheaded, for about 10 repetitions.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you’re unable to fully realize the contraction, use your hands to push into the lower abdominals to aid in the movement.
