Rock climbing is an activity that is gaining popularity throughout the United States. One aspect of rock climbing that must be taken into consideration is the climbing rope.

    How to Select Climbing Ropes

  1. Step 1

Think about your activity. When selecting a rope, the first think you need to think about is what you will be using the rope for and in what type of environment will you be using the rope.

  2. Step 2

Know if you are taking a friend. When selecting a climbing rope, you have the option of a single rope which is for climbing alone and half and twin ropes which are used together. The rope that is best for you will depend on if you are alone or with a partner.

  3. Step 3

Consider the fall rating. The fall rating is stated on the rope and refers to how many falls that rope can take before a new one must be used. Keep this rating in mind when selecting your climbing rope.

  4. Step 4

Decide if a treated rope is important. Ropes can be waterproof-treated or non-treated. Again, consider your activity and environment before deciding if you need a treated rope.

  5. Step 5

Determine your needed length. Longer ropes can be heavier and harder to work with, but having more rope allows for different advantages such as being able to climb larger rocks.

  6. Step 6

Consider the stiffness. Softer ropes are more manageable, but stiffer ropes can last over a longer period time. Determine which factor is more essential for your climbing needs.

  7. Step 7

Check the durability of the rope. A general rule concerning the durability of a rock climbing rope is that skinnier ropes are more likely to wear and tear than fatter ropes do.

on 9/7/2008 I really enjoyed this article. Very thorough and a good introduction to climbing kits. I found a company called Tech Safety Lines that teach on-site rescue training, and manufactures patented self-rescue kits and climbing gear. Check them out.
