Things You'll Need:
- Protective gear

Step 1
Take a serious look at your finances before you buy anything, including an ATV or Go Cart. You also need to make some decisions such as: Can you afford to pay for the machine straight out? If you can manage this, it will help you to avoid adding any more monthly bills to your budget. If you do have to pay for the ATV or Go cart on a monthly basis, are you getting the right deal? Look at more than just your monthly payment. Look at the interest you are paying. Could you get a better deal by putting the purchase on one of your credit cards with a lower rate?
-
Step 2
Consider the size of the person or people who will be riding the ATV or go cart the most. The size of their legs and arms should be a deciding factor in the size of the machine you buy. The size of their body and the strength they have should also be a consideration. You don't want to buy a machine that is too heavy or too big for your child to handle safely. One way to ensure that the machine is big enough, yet not too big is to actually have the person who will be using it that most, to try it out before purchasing.
-
Step 3
Consider the age of the person who will be using the machine the most. The age is just as important as the size. Can the child actually control the machine safely? If the child is young or you are worrisome, you may want to purchase a model that comes with a remote shut off switch. This will give you some control over the machine, even when the child is driving it.
-
Step 4
Consider the main uses for the machine. There is a difference in the type of machine you may need for work purposes (such as farming) and from fun activities (such as mudding).
-
Step 5
Once you find the ideal machine to purchase, practice on it (or have your child practice on it) before taking it on a long adventure or before racing around with other people. Familiarize yourself with the switches, the speed controls and the best way to brake.
