How to File Maine State Income Taxes

The information is based your federal tax form information. File your Maine state income taxes after you fill out your federal tax forms for the IRS, to make filing taxes in Maine even easier.

Things You'll Need:

  • W-2 forms for the previous year
  • 1099 forms if applicable
  • A completed Federal tax form
  • A computer
  • Internet access
  • Internet Explorer 5.5 or newer
  • Netscape 5.0 or newer
  • Adobe Acrobat (optional)
  1. Step 1

    Go to the Maine Revenue Services website. Register at the Maine Revenue Services site in order file state income taxes. Verify that you meet the current income and residency requirements for filing state income taxes in Maine online.

  2. Step 2

    Create a username and a password to file state income taxes at the Maine Revenue Services site. Write this information down in an address book.

  3. Step 3

    Fill out all personal information including address information, marital status and filing status.

  4. Step 4

    Enter information from your federal tax form that you filled out for the IRS. Fill out the W2 information. Add the 1099 information if appropriate.

  5. Step 5

    Add information from Schedule 1, including deductions. Include tax additions and tax deductions.

  6. Step 6

    Review the entire Maine state income tax form. Choose the method for receiving the refund or your payment method. Most forms can be filed online. The Maine state income tax web site will prompt you to mail in certain forms, if that applies to you.

  • State income in max ranges from 2 percent to 8.5 percent.
