How to Crochet a Yarmulke

Many people decide to crochet their own yarmulke by hand instead of purchasing one that is manufactured or made by a company.

Covering One's Head with a Handmade Covering

1. The word yarmulke is defined as "yireh melekh," or "fear or awe of the King." The custom of covering one's head in Judaism . occurred gradually over time. Originally, a head covering was worn for prayer, religious study, and while eating. By the 1500's, it was universally accepted among Jews as the proper attire throughout the day. Today, some Jews cover their heads all day, while most wear yarmulkes while praying, studying sacred texts, and eating.Crocheted yarmulkes are special, because they can be handmade and have unique designs for each person. They are also easy enough for children to make. They also make wonderful gifts, because they are from the heart.

2. There are many different patterns that can be followed. These can be found in books on crocheting, as well as through synagogues and online. Here is a very simple pattern: Chain 5. Round 1: Make a ring with the chains then make 8 single crochet into the center. Mark the beginning of the round. Round 2: Do 2 single crochet in each single crochet, or 16 stitches. Round 3: *Do 2 single crochet (sc) in the first stitch, 1 sc in the next. Repeat from * around, 24 stitches. (*Repeat instructions given amount of times.) Round 4: *Do 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * around, or 32 stitches. Round 5: *Do 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches. Repeat from * around, or 40 stitches.Continue with the sc, increasing 8 stitches evenly per each round until the yarmulka is the right size. The yarmulka will be flat or possibly slightly curled, because no increases are made once thepattern is begun. The pattern causes the bowl shape of the yarmulke.Design a pattern that takes 8 to 15 rows. Count the number of stitches needed to crochet the pattern around the yarmulka. Increase on the next row to get the correct number of stitches. Start crocheting in the pattern. Once the whole pattern is crocheted, add 1-2 more rows.

3. Wash and block the yarmulka over a proper sized bowl to get the correct shape or press dry to the desired size and shape. Once the pattern is followed, it is easy enough to develop one's own patterns and make changes as one goes along. It's enjoyable to have a group of adults and children come together for a crochet group.

Tips & Warnings

• There is always someone in the synagogue or neighborhood who can crochet, if someone is just learning the craft. These yarmulke are easy enough to do that they make a perfect first project for a new learner.

I love the picture above with all of the yalmukes. There is one yalmulke on the far left bottom of the picture that has only a Star of David. Where can I get that yalmuke?
