Stem cell researchers have categorized two types of mammalian stem cells: embryonic, found it blastocysts, and adult, found in adult tissues. Because stem cells can develop and transform into various specialized embryonic tissues, many medical experts and in the general population have proposed using stem cells in medical therapies--a controversial topic, as the destruction of a human embryo or therapeutic cloning is necessary to begin such a procedure.
