Step 1
Got water? Choose a waterfall, river, lake or ocean destination for camping, hiking, sightseeing, fishing, swimming, rafting or sunbathing fun. If you are lucky enough to have a major watershed within 100 to 200 miles from home, take advantage of it. Head for a new spot, perhaps in a state or national park recreation area, and get wet. Talk to friends for specific recommendations.

Step 2
Try a campsite you have never tried before. Chances are, your circle will include a number of campsites. You can't have gone to every one. Broaden your horizons by trying one that is a bit out of the way or no reservations, to simplify life. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you find--perhaps even a site that will merit a repeat visit in future summers. Not into camping? Just go for a long hike on one of the trails you've always meant to explore. Park services have detailed maps to show you the hikes available.

Step 3
Head for a theme park or water park for family fun. Check to see exactly what parks are available in the circle you have drawn, and perhaps spend a night close by so your family is not rushed. Near an urban center or larger town? There may be science or children's museums you have never visited, a few hours' drive away, just waiting for action.

Step 4
Research local hot springs or day spas if you prefer a romantic or "girlfriend" getaway or mini vacation. For a few days, bask in thermal waters, get a massage and relax. Or have the manicure, pedicure or foot rub of your dreams.
