How to Double Strand Twist Your Hair

Double strand twists are a fun hairstyle that you can use to give your hair a break from the wear and tear of everyday styling. It can be left in for a few days or a few weeks depending on the type of hair you have. The style is faster to do than braiding and works best in African American hair or tightly curled hair. When you take your double strand twists out your hair has a nice wave pattern.

How to Double Strand Twist Your Hair

  1. Step 1

Decide how large you want your twists to be. Many people like small twists.

  2. Step 2

Use your comb to part off a section of hair in a 1/2-inch square. Part off a larger section for larger twists and a smaller section for larger twists.

  3. Step 3

Use clips to hold the rest of your hair out of your way.

  4. Step 4

Comb out the section you've parted off. If your hair is dry put a little oil on it. If your curls are loose and won't stay together well when twisted put a small amount of gel on the section.

  5. Step 5

Separate the section into two equally sized sections of hair. You can just do this with your fingers you don't need a comb.

  6. Step 6

Use both hands to hold the separate sections; one to hold one section and one to hold the other.

  7. Step 7

Cross one section over the other by crossing one hand over the other. Then switch which section is held by which hand.

  8. Step 8

Repeat this crossing over of the two sections again and again so that your hair twists together like a rope. When you get to the end of the section of hair your curls should wrap around themselves holding the twist in. If you feel like the twist is coming out you can secure it with a small rubber band.

  9. Step 9

Repeat these steps until you've twisted all the hair on your head.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to twist your hair in the direction you want the twist to lie.
