    • 1

So you have just broke up with your significant other. Whether you are the dumper or the dumpee this can be an extremely difficult time. Trying to think about something other than that person and all that you have been through seems next to impossible! The first thing you need to do it to get your feel on the ground. By this, I mean you need to get ahold of your emotions, take a deep breath and open your eyes. Life was livable before the relationship started, so you can make it through this. You have great friends and an excellent family. You do need to remember, however, that you are no longer with that person and never will be again. This is the most difficult thing - self-realization.

Next, after you have come to the realization your relationship is no more, do more than realize it - act it. Don't go to the place where you had your first date. Put away all those movie stubs and gifts you gave each other. These memories will only bring back all of the emotions of your relationship and then you are back to square one.

After you have realized and acted upon the notion that your relationship is no more, you need to start new. This can be a very exciting time, believe it or not. Be with your family and lean on the support of your friends, nothing in your life is more important. Go see a movie with your friends, have your family over for dinner, or pad that phone bill with long conversations with them. Try to steer clear of talking about your old relationship. Focus on what you are doing now, your work, your family, your home.

Finally, once you have done all of the above steps. It is time to take a weekend and go out with your friends and enjoy yourself, who knows...maybe you'll meet a fun and exciting new person.

Tips & Warnings

  • Friends and family are the most important people in your life after a break up.

  • Don't dwell too much on your recently ended relationship. Though there is a time and place to reflect on the past, continuing to dwell on the past relationship can lead to health problems, alcohol abuse, or even drug addiction.
