How to Do Lindy Swing Dancing

  1. Step 1

Watch the experts. Before you begin any new style of dance it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the moves, the music, and the rhythm. You will find many opportunities online to see the Lindy Hop but if you have the opportunity to see it in person you will find that film and/or video are poor substitutes. This is one dance that is not only about the moves but also the nonverbal communication between partners. Watch the eyes and the facial expressions of the dancers and you'll see for yourself.

  2. Step 2

Master the Floor Steps. The Floor Steps are the basic footwork maneuvers involved in the Lindy Hop. It may be tempting to move on to bigger and better moves but you must have the basics down before you can move on to the more advanced, and dangerous moves. Mastering the basics also gives you the opportunity to become more familiar with your partner and develop your own nonverbal communication methods to make the dancing experience more enjoyable for you both as well as your audience.

  3. Step 3

Move on to the Shine Steps. Shine Steps are the steps that set you apart from all the other Lindy Swing Dancers and are essential for those interested in dancing the Lindy Hop competitively. When you and your partner are ready to move on and take your dancing up another notch the Shine Steps are going to literally make you “shine” brighter than the competition.

  4. Step 4

Learn the Air Steps. The one thing that really sets the Lindy Hop apart from other dances is the Air Step. Now this is something that you and your partner will need to work out together but these steps are going to be the steps that are often the most fun, the most entertaining to audiences, and carry the mot potential danger. Be sure that you and your partner have excellent communication skills and a good rapport before even attempting these steps in addition to excellent basic footwork for Lindy Swing Dancing.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Lindy Swing Dancing is exciting to watch and to perform but requires a great deal of space. Make sure you have plenty of space for this dance so that no one is injured during the fun.
