Things You'll Need:
- Birth control pills
- Back-up birth control method
-
Step 1
Choose a 21-day or a 28-day birth control package. There are two types of oral contraceptives. If you choose a 28-day package, take one pill a day and start a new package at the beginning of each month. If you choose a 21-day package, you’ll take one pill a day, and then stop taking the pill for one week.
-
Step 2
Start an oral contraceptive on the first day of your period, or the first Sunday after your period. Talk with your doctor and determine the best time to begin an oral contraceptive. Either method results in a menstrual cycle every four weeks.
-
Step 3
Use a back-up method for the first week. Birth control pills aren’t immediately effective. Allow time for the medication to work. Ideally, it’s best to use a back-up birth control method for the first week or two.
-
Step 4
Take the pill at the same time each day. To ensure protection against pregnancy, it’s best to take oral contraceptive at the same time each day, preferably in the mornings or at night. If you forget a dosage, take the pill immediately and then continue with your normal schedule.

Step 5
Talk with your doctor before taking medications or vitamin supplements. Several medications and natural remedies decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. If you need to take antibiotics or other medication, use a back-up birth control method.
