How to Decline an Invitation to Be in a Wedding

Weddings are wonderful, joyous events. But there's a lot of chaos and planning and money involved in them as well. You might be asked to be part of a wedding and feel obligated to say yes, but the truth is you really don't have to. You can decline if you can't afford it, don't have the time, or simply don't want to be in the wedding.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Meet with the person in private. If this is not possible then at least get a chance to pull them away from the other people.

  2. Step 2

Start by telling them you are ever so happy for them and think the wedding will be wonderful. Explain that while you would love to be part of their special day you just don't think you can at this time.

  3. Step 3

Continue by explaining your situation; finances, time, scheduling or lack of desire to participate. They will likely have questions. Try to answer these as diplomatically, thoughtfully and honestly as possible. But remember that this is someone's wedding, they are often very touchy about it and all things having to do with it.

  4. Step 4

End by thanking them again for the invitation and restating that you wish you could be part of it but unfortunately cannot. If they react badly, try to make them understand again. If they still can't understand or are upset, just leave it as it is and wish them all the best with the wedding.

  5. Step 5

Send them a note a few days later thanking them once again for the invitation and declining. Always end on a good note, preferably something about their good nature, how great their wedding will be or how stunning they will look. Good luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be courteous and cautious.
