A deck can be a great place to spend an afternoon. But if your deck is exposed to the sun, a summer afternoon can be too hot for you to enjoy the outdoors. Here's an easy way to add an umbrella mount to your deck that won't take up any extra space.

From Quick Guide: Building a Deck
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deck umbrella
  • PVC piping
  • Nut and bolt
  • Wood screws
  • Lag bolts
  • Drill
  • Hand tools

How to Build a Deck Rail Umbrella Holder

  1. Step 1

Determine where you want to place the umbrella.Find a spot on the outside rail of the deck. Measure the vertical height of the deck rail vertical support at that point.

  2. Step 2

Cut a piece of PVC tube to match the length you measured. The tube should be slightly wider than the umbrella's center pole.

  3. Step 3

Drill three to four holes in the PVC pipe. Space them evenly and put them in a straight line. At the bottom of the tube, put the nut and bolt through the tube at right angles--this prevents the bottom of the umbrella pole from sliding all the way through the tube.

  4. Step 4

Place the pipe against the rail, with the holes on the outside. Using the holes for access, attach the pipe to the deck rail vertical support with wood screws. Tighten the screws so they are flush.

  5. Step 5

Insert your umbrella into the tube. You've got shade!

Tips & Warnings
  • Before beginning work, check the position of the sun during the day, so as to get the maximum amount of shade from the umbrella.
  • If the upper rail of your deck rail extends over the vertical supports, you may need to offset it out from the support by first installing a piece of board in that location.
