Instructions

  1. Apply for an Internship at the St. Louis Zoo

    • 1

Make arrangements to receive college credit. Consult with your college adviser to find out how you can get credit through your university. Each school is different, but in general, you can expect to receive two to four credit hours.

    • 2

Start studying animals. You will be required to prove that you are studying in a field related to zoo operations in some of your coursework. You could be studying anything from zoology and animal science, to marketing and human resources. Being able to explain how the internship will help broaden your studies will be helpful.

    • 3

Be ready to spend at least 20 hours at the zoo each week. Internships at the St. Louis Zoo last for at least six weeks. You can work another job or even be employed at the zoo while completing the internship. Most internship opportunities at the zoo are only available during the summer.

    • 4

Complete an internship application. You will be asked to submit general information about your college and references.

    • 5

Write a letter about your goals and why you are interested in working at the St. Louis Zoo. You will also need to include some background information about yourself and let them know when you are available to work.

    • 6

Spruce up your resume. The St. Louis Zoo will ask for a copy.

    • 7

Send a college transcript. It’s best to have your college send a sealed transcript. This is the rule of thumb for any internship.

    • 8

Send two reference letters. You can ask your college advisor, your teacher, or anyone who can vouch for your interest in animals to write a letter of recommendation.

    • 9

Send the information to the St. Louis Zoo’s Volunteer Services department. Make sure you get your information in on time. There are several different deadlines depending on when you plan to complete your internship.

Tips & Warnings

  • Expect to work outside and get up close with some exotic animals.
