How to Ink a Pencil Drawing

Inking can completely change the style of a piece of artwork, or it can simply be done so that that the picture shows up better on a scanner.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • High quality ink pen with a thin tip
  • Previously drawn artwork

    Inking the Drawing

  1. Step 1

    Erase all unnecessary pencil marks. This will make it easier for you to know where to trace your original drawing.

  2. Step 2

    Trace each base line. Some artists find it easier to trace with quick strokes, while other artists find it easier to trace slowly.

  3. Step 3

    As you ink, try to improve the lines that you notice are drawn poorly.

  4. Step 4

    Use a variety of strokes to add texture to your drawing.

  5. Step 5

    Add extra details and shading with the pen, or scan the drawing and make the improvements with a Photoshop program.

Tips & Warnings
  • If a line isn't smooth, go over it again to smooth it out.
  • Keep your hand loose while inking.
