Add pizazz to your handmade soap by making and applying your own decals. Decals allow you to customize your soap without affecting the quality because the decals dissolve with use. Decals are also a wonderful way to personalize a gift for the recipient. Not to mention, making decals is a great way to recycle since the decals are essentially created from clippings of gift wrap, tissue or greeting cards. So follow these steps if you want to learn how to make decals for your handmade soap.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Decals
  • Bars of soap
  • Paraffin
  • Can
  • Frying pan
  • Stove
  • Tweezers
  • Small paint brush
  • Baby oil
  • Cloth
  1. Step 1

Select and trim images to use as decals. Choose images from gift wrap or magazines that have clearly defined edges; defined images are easier to cut. Try to avoid using images from heavy card stock. Keep in mind the size of the bar of soap. Avoid selecting an image that is too large. Then use scissors to cut out the images.

  2. Step 2

Select a bar of soap that can be presented as a gift. Trim and smooth any uneven edges, especially the side on which decal is to be applied.

  3. Step 3

Melt the paraffin. Place a 1 lb. block of paraffin in a small shallow can, such as a tuna can. Next, place the can in a frying pan. Fill the frying pan with an inch of water. Place the frying pan on the stove burner at a low temperature setting. Paraffin is flammable at high temperatures. Remove the frying pan from the heat when the paraffin is melted.

  4. Step 4

Hold the decal with tweezers and apply paraffin to the reverse side with a paint brush.

  5. Step 5

Place the decal on the bar of soap. Try to position the decal in the center of the box. Allow the paraffin to cool.

  6. Step 6

Apply baby oil to a cloth. Rub the decal with the cloth vigorously. Continue rubbing until the decal is revealed. Be sure not to rub all the paraffin off.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can substitute mineral oil for the baby oil.
  • Use solid bars as opposed to translucent.
  • Do not heat the paraffin at a high temperature as it is flammable.
