Check for alternate flights. The first step is to make sure there is a flight available during the time slot you wish to fly. The more common your end destination, the more likely you will be to find an alternate flight.

Call the airline. After finding a flight you want to fly, call the airline. They will ask for your confirmation number and search for available flights. Having the flight number for the new flight available will save time.

Switch to the desired flight. If the flight has the same base price as the previously scheduled flight there will be no charge for the upgrade. But you will often be offered other upgrades for a small fee.

Print off the new itinerary. While you will only need the old confirmation number to check in for the new flight, having a current itinerary will make you feel more secure when walking into the airport.
