Diaper Cake
Diaper Cake

This is a complete how-to on making a diaper cake

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Diapers (Size 1 or 2)
  • Clear Rubberbands
  • Cake board (to sit diaper cake on)
  • Ribbon (thick ribbon works best)
  • Artificial Flowers (optional)
  • Baby Items (pacifiers, bottles, lotions, etc)
  1. Step 1

To make a three-tier diaper cake, you will need about 50 size 1 diapers. You can make yours larger or smaller, and you can also use bigger diapers if you would like. If you use a larger size diaper, the mom-to-be can save the diaper cake for a little while as opposed to having to tear into it right away to use the diapers.

Take the diapers, and roll them up, starting with the open end. If they have designs on them, make sure you roll them all a similar way so they don't clash with each other when stacked. After you have one diaper rolled, secure it with a clear rubber band and set aside. Do this for all 50 diapers.

  2. Step 2

Start with a bottle as the base of the diaper cake. You can fill the bottle with flowers (kind of like a vase), or with candies for the mom-to-be. Take a large rubber band and put it around the bottle. Stretch the rubber band out to fit some diapers under it. You will probably use about 8 diapers for the first row. You want to go all the way around the bottle, so none of it is showing. Repeat the process, making a second and third row outside of the first. Just pull the rubber band back to put some more diapers in. You want to keep it as circular as possible, to reduce frustrations of "fixing" it later.

  3. Step 3

Repeat Step 2 for the second tier, only making this one a little smaller than the first. At this point, you will want to set your diaper cake on the cake board if you haven't already.

  4. Step 4

After you have completed the first two tiers, you can take a few diapers out and replace with lotions or other baby gifts. You can also leave it how it is and put the gifts on the outside - it's up to you.

  5. Step 5

Repeat step 2 for the third tier, only making this one even smaller than the first two. You can use a wooden dowel (put it next to the bottle) to secure the diapers on the top two tiers if it isn't very stable at this point.

  6. Step 6

Decorate your cake! You want to use the ribbon first. Wrap it around each tier to cover the rubber band that you used to keep them all close together. You can use a thick ribbon for this, and accent with two smaller ribbons (one on top, one on bottom, of the thicker ribbon). Just use your imagination with it - it doesn't have to be perfect! You can use ribbon to wrap pacifiers onto the cake, or you can hide them inside of the cake. You can also tape them onto the ribbon. Top the cake with flowers or a stuffed animal for a nice effect.

  7. Step 7

To transport your cake, you will want to wrap it up. Use tulle or cellophane to do this.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use size 2 diapers if you don't want mom-to-be to have to tear into it right away.
  • Give creative and useful gifts, such as pacifiers, lotions, etc.
  • Don't overcrowd the cake. You can always use a gift bag for extra gifts.
  • Search www.photobucket.com or www.flickr.com for images of diaper cakes - this will help in the building process.
  • You Tube also has some videos of making diaper cakes that are very helpful.
  • Don't use too many things on the cake or it will look too busy and cluttered.
  • Use plain white diapers if you can, because a pattern will distract from the overall look of your cake (unless your theme matches the diapers).
  • Use clear rubber bands or it looks pretty bad.
