After reading this you should be able to make a fresh pizza dough and create a delicious, simple stromboli.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 packet of active dry yeast, 12 grams or roughly 1/2 ounce
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil, extra for coating
  • Food Proccesor or two large bowls
  • Filling ingredients, such as ground or chunked chicken, hamburger, veggies, cheese, sauce, whatever you like!
  1. Step 1

Combine flour, sugar, and salt in the food processor or large bowl. Add in the yeast packet, water, and oil to the dry ingredients. Stir or process the mixture until it forms a compact, sticky ball.

  2. Step 2

Place the dough ball on a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth, this usually takes about three to five passes. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour as nessecary.

  3. Step 3

Form dough back into a ball and place into a large, well oiled bowl and turn to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, a cloth, or towel and let it rise for one hour in a warm area.

  4. Step 4

After an hour, the dough should have easily doubled in size. If need be, let your dough rise for an extra half hour. Once dough has risen, return it to a well floured surface and punch the air out of it.

  5. Step 5

Gently roll or pull the dough into a half inch thick circle. Place the circle of dough on a cookie sheet. It's time to fill!

  6. Step 6

Add sauce to half of the surface of the dough, leaving at least a half inch around the edge. Layer on toppings however you wish. When the stromboli is filled to your liking, simply fold the empty side over the filled side. Crimp, roll, or fork the edges as tightly as possible.

  7. Step 7

Bake pizza at 475 degrees Fahrenheit, or 246 degrees Celsius for 15 to 20 minutes. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Preheat the oven for 10-20 minutes.
  • A pizza stone will work wonders if you have one!
  • If the dough gets tears in it, simply bunch it back together and press it sealed.
  • Moving the finished stromboli to a cooling rack after baking will ensure the bottom does not get soggy.
  • If you are making a mixture of meat and vegetables, such as ground chicken or hamburger, pre cooking them all together makes for a much better stromboli.
  • Brushing the stop of the prepared stromboli with oil or butter before baking will give a great golden, crunchy crust.
  • You can make your stromboli in any shape you wish, circle is best for beginners as it is easiest to fold.
  • You can add spices and seasonings to your dough for extra flavor, be creative!
  • As in anything baked, the contents of the stromboli will be VERY hot!! Please use caution when eating directly from the oven.
