When it comes to be a receiver in the game of football, it is all about correctly running your patters so that they become second nature to you. You don't want to be in the middle of a game winning drive and forget how to run your route. Here are some tips on how to use cones in practice so that you can run a football post route during crunch time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Football
  • Cones
  • Receiver
  • Quarterback throwing the football
  1. Step 1

Set cones five yards apart in a post route formation. A post route starts by running straight toward the defense, at some point in the pattern (determined by which play you are practicing). The receiver will make an angled turn to the inside or outside. This angle will be about 45 degrees. Set the cones so that it covers the full length of the route with the final cone resting where the receiver expects to catch the football.

  2. Step 2

Rush off the line of scrimmage as soon as the ball is snapped and run along the outside of the cones.

  3. Step 3

Count how many steps you are taking before you make your cut on the angle. This will be important during game time. Rather than guessing how far to go out, you can simply count the correct number of steps in your head before making the catch.

  4. Step 4

Open your body slightly by adjusting your shoulder back toward the quarterback. This will allow you to see the football as it descends to you while you are running your post route.

  5. Step 5

Catch and secure the football on your post route.

  6. Step 6

Repeat this drill until you have memorized all of your receiving routes in the football playbook. By not needing to second-guess yourself, you are giving yourself a leg up on the competition.
