When it comes to being a receiver in football, catching the ball is hard enough, but holding onto the ball as a defensive back crashes into you can seem impossible. Here are some tips on how to catch and secure the football with your body so that you avoid fumbling the football.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Receiver
  • Football
  • Quarterback
  1. Step 1

Run your route with an eye toward the football. All different routes are going to take you all different places across the field. This means that if you are running a post route over the middle, the defender will be attacking you head on, while if you run a route to the sideline the defender will be hitting you from behind. The point being until the ball is in your possession, you can't worry about securing it.

  2. Step 2

Go to the football with your hands. The longer the football is in the air, the greater chance that it can be picked off or tipped away by the defense. Rather than waiting for the ball to come to you, extend your hands to it. Be aggressive and attack the ball.

  3. Step 3

Perform the double arm tuck. The moment you get the football in your position, place one hand under the football with your palm on one end, and the other hand over the football with your hand on the other end. Two hands, giving you the double tuck.

  4. Step 4

Bring the ball into your gut and crouch your shoulders over the football. Once you catch the football, you are milliseconds away from a defender drilling you from behind, so use your gut to cradle the ball as yet another form of protection. This is how you catch the football with your body.

Tips & Warnings
  • Just because you catch the ball with your body, doesn't mean you give up trying to get some yards after the catch. Once the ball is secure and your feet are planted, turn and run up field, doing your best to thwart defenders.
